Baylor University High School Summer Science Research Program
The summer fellowship program gives superior high school students hands-on research experience by working on research projects with Baylor University science professors in many disciplines.

California Academy of Sciences High School Internship Program
A year-round high school internship to teach science to the museum's audiences, participate in authentic science research work with academic scientists, and provide administrative assistance to educational programs.
Eligibility: High school freshmen and sophomores who are at least 15 years old by September 1 who are residents of the Bay Area.

Jefferson Lab High School Summer Honors Program
Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is a center for both basic and applied research for using the free-electron lasers based on technology the laboratory developed to conduct its physics experiments.
Eligibility: High school students who are at least 16 years old.

Legacy Heritage Internship for Young Scientists (LHIYS)
A year-long experience which commences with a rigorous six-week summer program designed to introduce brilliant high school juniors with demonstrated scientific aptitude and community achievement to hands-on experience with Israeli scientists in the research laboratories of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, combined with extensive educational touring of the State of Israel and dynamic and engaging Jewish learning.
Eligibility: Teenagers in their junior year of high school residing in North America.

NASA GSFC High School Intern Program (HIP)
The 6-week summer intern program NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is designed to attract and motivate students to choose a summer career experience from which to learn more about space exploration in general, and GSFC-specific areas of earth science, space science, engineering, and technology. Clear expectations and mentored research lead to valued results for the students and NASA.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who are juniors and seniors in high school who will be at least 16 years of age by June, and are in a position to provide daily transportation to/from GSFC.

NASA GSFC Solar Terrestrial Probes (STP) / Living With a Star (LWS) Summer Internship
Offers an opportunity for students to help support the Sun-Earth Connection program. The program is intended to encourage students to both pursue and earn engineering and space science degrees and to enhance their interest in careers at GSFC by exposing them to its professional resources and facilities.
Eligibility: High school juniors and seniors enrolled in a high school or college prep school within a 100 mile radius of GSFC who are U.S. citizens or have established residency in the U.S. Also open to undergraduates.

NASA INSPIRE
NASA Interdisciplinary National Science Project Incorporating Research and Education Experience (INSPIRE) is a multi-tiered student pipeline project for students and their parent or legal guardian designed to provide grade-appropriate NASA-related resources and experiences to encourage and reinforce students' aspirations to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. INSPIRE participants will be matched to one of the 10 NASA facilities based on the participant's place of residence and the NASA facility Area of Service.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens in grades 9 through 12 or freshman year of college.

NASA JSC Career Exploration Program (CEP)
Students work at Johnson Space Center part-time during their senior year in high school and the summer following graduation. They learn valuable technical and office skills while being exposed to positive role models and work ethics.
Eligibility: High school seniors

NASA Kennedy Space Center Internship Program
Provide paid summer internships to full time students and faculty the opportunity to train, educate and motivate a future which may lead toward NASA-related careers in business, science and engineering related disciplines.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens at least 16 years old when entering the internship who live within a 50 mile radius of KSC.

NASA Lewis' Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Program (LERCIP)
This six-week educational program provides a summer opportunity for students are interested in science, technology, engineering, math and professional administration.
Eligibility: Sophomore or junior high school students who are U.S. citizens and at least 16-years-old by the program start date. Students must be permanent residents of northeast Ohio and attend school within a 50 mile radius of Glenn Research Center.

NASA MSFC Student Volunteer Service Project
Provides qualified students a means to volunteer their services to MSFC, gain work experience and knowledge, and engage in early career exploration on a nonpaying, voluntary basis at MSFC during a specific time and under the direction of a designated center employee.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who are at least 16 years of age and at least a junior in high school.

NASA MSFC / USRA Visiting Researcher Exchange and Outreach Program
A year-round collaborative program between Marshall Space Flight Center and Universities Space Research Association that provides a link between university, private sector, and government agency researchers and MSFC scientists, engineers, and technologists.
Eligibility: Open to pre-college students. Also open to undergraduate and graduate students.

National Space Club Scholars Program
A 6-week summer intern program with space scientists and engineers at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD and NASA Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, VA.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who have completed sophomore year in high school by the end of the current academic year, be at least 16 years of age by the starting date of the program, and maintain permanent residence within commuting distance of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, or the NASA Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, VA.

Northwestern University High School Summer Research Program
The program provides an opportunity for high-school students to work with a professor in one of several areas of space sciences and astrophysics.
Eligibility: Current high school students who are U.S. citizens.

Office of Naval Research Science and Engineering Apprentice Program (SEAP)
SEAP provides competitive research internships to approximately 250 high school students each year. Participating students spend eight weeks during the summer doing research at approximately 15 Department of Navy DoN laboratories.
Eligibility: High school students who have completed at least 9th grade who are at least16 years of age for most laboratories (some laboratories may accept a 15-year-old applicant). Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens.

Sandia National Labs New Mexico Student Internship Program
The Pre-college Internship Program has a wide variety of challenging and rewarding learning experiences for our nation's future engineers, scientists, technologists, and business leaders. This program will provide you with the unique opportunity to work with people who are global leaders in their fields.
Eligibility: Local high school in the Albuquerque metropolitan area who are least 16 years of age.

Sandia National Labs Physical Sciences Institute (PSI)
Summer or year-round interns take physical science problems "hands on."
Eligibility: Full-time high school through doctoral students who are U.S. citizens.

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Summer Employment Program
Provides exposure to career opportunities, people, places, and situations at the U.S. NRC in the following disciplines: administrative, engineering, information technology, and physical science. The jobs in this program offer temporary employment for up to 89 days between May and September.
Eligibility: High school students who are U.S. citizens. Undergraduate through Ph.D. students are also eligible.

UC Berkeley Microfabrication Lab Summer Internship Program for High School Girls
Researchers make integrated circuits which go in computers, cell phones, PDAs, etc. Students also design MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems), which are tiny machines that have all kinds of interesting applications. During the summer, students will assist Microlab staff engineers in making monitoring runs on processing equipment and analyzing data.
Eligibility: Junior or senior high school girls who are at least 16 years old who live within a commuting distance from UC Berkeley.

Undergraduates

Alaska Research Summer Challenge
A summer intern program in Fairbanks, Alaska at the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC). Major objectives are to promote interests in arctic research and develop research skills within the students.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Applicants must not have completed their B.A. or B.S. prior the program start. Minority students are recruited to study in target areas of computer science, which are traditionally underrepresented.

APS/IBM Research Internship for Undergraduate Women
The internships are salaried positions typically 10 weeks long at one of three IBM research locations (San Jose, CA, Austin, TX, or Yorktown Heights, NY). The Watson lab has a full range of research, as does the Almaden lab, and the Austin lab focuses on software and systems.
Eligibility: Must be female with sophomore or junior standing at a U.S. college or university majoring in chemistry, physics, materials science or engineering, computer science or engineering, chemical, electrical, mechanical engineering. No citizenship restriction.

ANL DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships Program (SULI)
The U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory 10-week summer program provides students with basic scientific research programs in physical and life sciences, mathematics, computer science and engineering. Also applied research programs relating to coal, conservation, environmental impact and technology, fission, and fusion technology.
Eligibility: Currently enrolled undergraduates from a U.S. undergraduate institution with an interest in a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics who are 18 years or older at the start of the program.
Deadline: April 1, 2009

Caltech Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)
Introduces students to research under the guidance of seasoned research mentors at Caltech and JPL. Students experience the process of research as a creative intellectual activity.
Eligibility: Open to continuing undergraduate students.

Canadian Nuclear Society (CNS) Scholarship for an Undergraduate Summer Project
This scholarship is designed to support undergraduate summer work projects in nuclear science and engineering at Canadian universities.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students with a CNS-member faculty member supervising the project.

Case Western Reserve University Summer Undergrad Research Program for Minorities
Ten-week summer program offers research opportunities for minority undergraduate students in science and engineering. Students work in a research laboratory or research program under the direction of a faculty member, attend lectures by science and engineering faculty, and give poster presentations at the end of the program.
Eligibility: Undergraduates in science and engineering

CfAO Hawaii Island Observatory Internship Program
The Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO) offers community college students and undergraduates that are Hawaii residents an opportunity to get involved in research at the Mauna Kea Observatories during the summer. It is an eight-week introduction to research method and tools with an emphasis on adaptive optics science. Each student is matched with a research advisor and is integrated as a member of the advisor's research group with daily guidance by a research supervisor.
Eligibility: Community college students and undergraduates who are Hawaii residents who are interested in pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) fields and have had to overcome barriers to achieve their educational and/or career goals. Must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and be at least 18-years-old by May.

CPIMA Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) Program
The Center on Polymer Interfaces and Macromolecular Assemblies (CPIMA) provides qualified undergraduates in chemical engineering, chemistry, materials science, physics, and related fields with a ten week summer research opportunity.
Eligibility: Sophomores, juniors, or seniors majoring in an engineering or physical science discipline who are U. S. citizens or U.S. legal permanent residents.

DSTO Summer Vacation Scholarship Program
The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) provides promising tertiary students with a means by which they may engage in and gain experience in research during the 12-week summer vacation period at a DSTO establishment.
Eligibility: Full-time tertiary students who will be continuing full-time tertiary studies in the forthcoming year and who are Australian citizens.

DOE Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships
This program places students in paid internships in science and engineering at any of several Department of Energy facilities. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs.
Eligibility: Undergraduate U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Deadline: July 2009 (fall term), October 2009 (spring term), February 2010 (summer term)

German Academic Exchange Service Research Internships in Science and Engineering
Provide students the summer research opportunity to live and work in an international context, to gain confidence in their practical and theoretical skills, and to improve their (or begin learning!) German.
Eligibility: Undergraduates who will have completed at least 2 years of a degree program but will still have undergraduate status upon return to North America who are enrolled at an United States or Canadian university/college as a full-time student in the field of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences or Engineering (or a closely related field). German language skills are not required for most positions but would be helpful.

High Altitude Observatory Summer Undergraduate Student Visitor Program
The three-month summer program involves research in theoretical, experimental, observational, and interpretive solar physics, solar-terrestrial physics, and related astrophysics. The study of the earth's upper atmosphere, planetary, stellar, and other astrophysical systems related to those of the sun are also encouraged.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students.

Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics Research in Industrial Projects for Students
The Research in Industrial Projects (RIPS) Program provides an opportunity for high-achieving undergraduate students to work in teams on a real-world research project proposed by a sponsor from industry or a national lab. Projects are selected to have a major mathematical component and to be something that will pose an interesting challenge to talented undergraduates.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students or recent graduates. International students are eligible to apply.

Iowa State University Summer Research Internships for Women in Science & Engineering
The eight-week internship allows students to work on a variety of projects and gain hands-on research experience under the supervision of ISU faculty and staff. In addition, they attend weekly seminars, write research reports and summarize their research in poster presentations.
Eligibility: Sophomores, juniors, and seniors attending college who are interested in careers in science and engineering.

Lunar and Planetary Institute Summer Intern Program
Ten-week summer program allows students to work one-on-one with a scientist at the LPI or at the NASA Johnson Space Center on a research project of current interest in planetary science.
Eligibility: College undergraduates with at least 50 semester hours of credit who are interested in pursuing a career in the sciences are eligible.

National Academies Lloyd V. Berkner Space Policy Internship
The goal of the internship is to provide a promising undergraduate with an opportunity to work in the area of civil space research policy in the Nation's Capital, under the aegis of the National Academies.
Eligibility: Undergraduates majoring in physics, astronomy, chemistry, biology, or geology, and should have long-term career goals in research, applications, or policy in one of these areas. Undergraduates at all stages of their studies are encouraged to apply, but preference will be given to those who have completed their junior year.

NASA GSFC Summer Institute on Atmospheric, Biospheric, and Hydrospheric Sciences
The summer program is designed to introduce undergraduate students majoring in all areas of the physical sciences to research opportunities in the atmospheric, biospheric, hydrospheric, and solar and space plasma sciences, both theoretical and experimental.
Eligibility: Oriented toward juniors, but all undergraduates currently enrolled in a U.S. college or university are eligible. Students must be U.S. Citizens or holders of a Green Card indicating their intention of becoming a citizen.

NASA INSPIRE

An 8-weeks summer undergraduate research program where students work closely with a NASA investigator to learn the details of research in planetary geosciences.
Eligibility: Undergraduates majoring in geology or related sciences. Preference will be given to U.S. citizens.

NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP)
A ten to fifteen week research experience at a participating NASA center under the supervision of a NASA technical mentor.
Eligibility: Junior or senior with U.S. citizenship.

Nat'l Inst. of Standards & Tech. (NIST) Summer Undergrad. Research Fellowship (SURF)
The Physics Laboratory has a 12-week program located just outside Washington, D.C. providing hands-on research experience in atomic, molecular, optical, radiation and chemical physics.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students at a U.S. university or college with scientific majors who intend to pursue a Ph.D. in atomic, molecular, optical, radiation, medical, or chemical physics. Must be a U.S. citizen.
Deadline: February 2010

NSF Science & Technology Centers (STCs) Undergraduate Research Experience
There are 17 STCs, located at prestigious universities around the United States, each with a specific research focus, but as a whole, our programs focus on such fields as the biological sciences, computer and information sciences, engineering, geosciences, and mathematical and physical sciences. Students have the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in a cutting-edge field.
Eligibility: Open to all undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

National Security Agency (NSA) Cryptologic Access Summer Intern Program (CAP)
For students interested in learning about how NSA participates in the Global War on Terrorism through a wide variety of collection capabilities, then you are beginning to touch the world of Signals Intelligence (SIGINT).
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who are freshmen, sophomores, or juniors majoring in technical fields such as math, computer science, engineering or telecommunications are preferred; however, applicants from any academic background who have the ability to think critically and communicate well orally and in writing will be considered.

Pennsylvania State University Astrobiology Summer Program
During the summer program, students research independently under the guidance of one or more astrobiologists. Also included are a field trip to NASA and astrobiology-related sites around Washington, D.C., weekly seminars, laboratory tours, stargazing opportunities, discussion group, and a research symposium.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens or permanent residents between their freshman and senior years at a college or university other than Penn State. Applicants should have a research interest in astrobiology and be contemplating a career in science.

Society of Physics Students (SPS) Internship Program
Broad-based learning opportunities for undergraduate physics majors in the areas of scientific research and outreach/policy. Students are placed in organizations and agencies in the Washington, D.C. area such as NIST, NASA, AIP, AAS, AAPT, APS, etc.
Eligibility: Undergraduate SPS members.

Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) Science Undergrad. Laboratory Internships
Program offers 8 to 9 week summer internships to research in accelerator physics, elementary particle physics, astrophysics, and X-ray studies in diverse fields including materials science and biochemistry.
Eligibility: Undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens who have at least one year of college-level physics.

UCLA Center for Embedded Networked Sensing (CENS) Summer Program
Provides undergraduates the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience in labs, to work with faculty, staff and graduate students, and to participate in research, professional development and social activities with other undergraduates. Research areas include: adaptive self-configuring wireless systems, coordinated actuation, collaborative signal processing, and micro/nano sensor technology.

University of Minnesota Supercomputing Institute Undergraduate Internship Program
The 10-week summer program in Scientific Computing and Graphics focuses on the application of computational approaches and visualization methods to supercomputing research. This includes digital simulation and advanced computation and all aspects of high-performance computing and scientific modeling and simulation as well as graphics, visualization, informatics, and high-performance network communications.
Eligibility: Undergraduates at any institution of higher learning in the United States who are citizens or permanent residents of U.S.

University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center QP-SURF
The Quantitative and Physical Sciences Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program is an intensive ten-week summer research training experience which leads to an understanding of the planning, discipline, and teamwork involved in the pursuit of basic answers to current questions at the interface of quantitative science and basic biomedical research.

Einstein Graduate Programs in the Biomedical Sciences SURP
The Summer Undergraduate Research Program offers undergraduates with a strong background in science who are considering a research career the opportunity to conduct original research in a laboratory for nine weeks during the summer.
Eligibility: Juniors and (rarely) sophomores with a strong background in the sciences (biology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, bioengineering or chemical engineering, etc.)

Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Undergraduate Internship
Spend 8 to 10 weeks working on a seismological research project with researchers at an IRIS member intuition. Research projects may involve the deployment of seismic instruments in the field (within the U.S. or internationally), and/or analyses of seismic data in a lab setting with the ultimate goal of producing results to be presented at a national scientific meeting.
Eligibility: Sophomores and juniors who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States.

IBM Research Internship for Black, Hispanic, and Native American Students
The 10-week research internship program at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, CA encourages under-represented minority students to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering.
Eligibility: Sophomores and juniors at a U.S. college or university majoring in chemistry, physics, materials science or engineering, computer science or engineering, chemical, electrical, or mechanical engineering who are under-represented minorities. No citizenship restriction.

MIT Center for Ultracold Atoms (CUA) Teaching Opportunities in Physical Science (TOPS)
Six-week summer program aimed at students considering careers in teaching at the secondary level. Participants will work in teams of four under the supervision of an experienced lead teacher to design courses, emphasizing hands-on experience, which they will teach to middle school and high school students. The topics for this year's groups will be waves and light, and heat and energy.
Eligibility: Sophomore and junior physics and engineering majors

NASA & NY Space Grant Undergrad. Summer Research Program at Cornell U.
The New York Space Grant Consortium will provide stipends for undergraduate students to conduct science and engineering research for 10 weeks in the summer at Cornell University.
Eligibility: Full-time sophomores and juniors who are United States citizens and wither New York state residents or attending a New York college/university.

NASA Summer Undergraduate Internship in Astrobiology (SUGIA)
A ten-week summer internship in astrobiology at the NASA Astrobiology Institute at Goddard Space Flight Center for undergraduate students interested in working with scientists whose research adds to the current body of astrobiology knowledge.
Eligibility: Sophomore or junior science and engineering majors at an accredited university with a demonstrated enthusiasm and interest in astrobiology and interest in scientific research.

Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory National Undergraduate Fellowship Program
The National Undergraduate Fellowship Program in Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy Sciences provides outstanding undergraduates with an opportunity to conduct research in the disciplines that comprise the plasma sciences in general and fusion research in particular.
Eligibility: Intended primarily for students completing their junior year majoring in physics or engineering, but highly motivated students completing their sophomore year are encouraged to apply as well. Must be a U.S. citizen or PRA and enrolled in a U.S. college or university.

University of Colorado Summer Multicultural Access to Research Training (SMART)

National Science Academies Science & Tech. Policy Graduate Fellowship Program
The 10-week fall, winter, or summer program in Washington, D.C. is designed to engage graduate science, engineering, medical, veterinary, business, public policy, and law students in the analysis that informs the creation of science and technology policy and to familiarize them with the interactions of science, technology, and government.
Eligibility: Graduate students through post-doctoral scholars (or those who have completed their graduate or postdoctoral studies within the last five years) in any physical, biological, or social science field or any field of engineering, medicine/health, or veterinary medicine as well as business, law, education, and other graduate and professional programs. Non-U.S.-citizens may be eligible.

American Nuclear Society (ANS) Incoming Freshman Scholarship
The core purpose of ANS is to promote the awareness and understanding of the application of nuclear science and technology.
Eligibility: Graduating high school seniors who have enrolled full-tim, in college courses and are pursuing a degree in nuclear engineering or have the intent to purse a degree in nuclear engineering.

Astronomical League National Young Astronomer Award (NYAA)
To encourage our nation's younger students, the Astronomical League has established the National Young Astronomer Award to recognize the outstanding achievements by high school-aged astronomers throughout the United States.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who are 14 to 19 years of age and not enrolled in college by the award deadline. Foreign students of the same age are eligible if they are enrolled in a U.S. secondary school on the application deadline.

AAPT Barbara Lotze Scholarships for Future Teachers
The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) offers two scholarships for future high school physics teachers. The scholarship provide a stipend of up to $2,000 and may be granted to an individual for each of four years.
Eligibility: Undergraduates and high school seniors who are U.S. citizens attending U.S. schools who are enrolled, or planning to enroll, in physics teacher preparation curricula.

AIAA Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship Program
The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics awards scholarships to undergraduates who plan to enter into some field of science or engineering encompassed by the technical activities of AIAA. Applicants may be students of any nationality in full-time study at any accredited college or university within the United States. Applicant does not have to be an AIAA student member in good standing to apply, but must become one before receiving a scholarship.

Microsoft Scholarship Program
Covers up to 100% tuition for the academic year. You may use the funds for tuition only, not for other costs listed on your bursar bill, such as room and board. You'll also need to enroll and complete a salaried summer internship of 12 weeks or more at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington.
Eligibility: Students enrolled full time in a bachelor's degree program at a college or university in the United States, Canada, or Mexico in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline such as electrical engineering, math, or physics.

Motivating Undergraduates in Science and Technology (MUST) Scholarship Program
Provides one-year partial tuition scholarship of up to one-half the tuition and fees, not to exceed $10,000 per academic year, and $5,000 stipend to participate in a summer research experience at a NASA center.
Eligibility: Open to rising high school senior, college freshman or sophomore who are U.S. citizens and who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline at a college or university that is accredited in the U.S.

APS Scholarship for Minority Undergraduate Physics Majors
The award consists of $2000 per year for new minority scholars, and $3000 per year for renewal students to be used for tuition, room & board, and educational materials. In addition, each physics department that hosts one or more APS minority undergraduate scholars and assigns a mentor for their students will receive a $500 award for programs to encourage minority students.
Eligibility: Any African-American, Hispanic American, or Native American U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is majoring or planning to major in physics, and who is a high school senior, college freshman, or sophomore is eligible to apply for the scholarship.

NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Undergraduate Program
Provides opportunities to attract highly motivated undergraduate students and helps to advance the nation's aeronautics enterprise by investing in the educational development of the future aeronautics workforce. Students awarded scholarships under this program will be provided an internship opportunity at a NASA center performing aeronautical research between their junior and senior year.

Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program
The purpose is to alleviate a critical current and future shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers, and to provide a continuing source of highly qualified individuals to those fields of academic study and research. Each scholarship covers eligible expenses for undergraduate tuition, fees, books, and room and board, up to a maximum of $7,500 annually.
Eligibility: Full-time sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, who are United States citizens, permanent residents, or nationals.

NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings scholarship program is designed to increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities. The program provides awards that include academic assistance for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who are full-time students majoring in a discipline area related to oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, or education, e.g., biological, social and physical sciences; mathematics; engineering; computer and information sciences; and teacher education. Open to 3rd year students in a four-year program or a 4th year student in a five year-program in the upcoming fall term in an accredited college or university within the United States or U.S. territories.

NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards (USRA)
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada provides awards to stimulate interest in research in the natural sciences and engineering and to encourage students to undertake graduate studies and pursue a research career in these fields.
Eligibility: Sophomore and junior Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada who are registered in a bachelor's degree program at an eligible university.

DSTO-AIP Undergraduate Scholarship Scheme
The Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) and the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) provide two scholarships to the value $15,000 each to two suitably qualified candidates. Each state and territory of Australia can submit one application to the AIP executive for consideration.
Eligibility: Full-time Australian students enrolled in their final year of a degree with a physics major who are undertaking an honours year of study in the year following the award of the scholarship.

DoD SMART Scholarship for Service Program
The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program is used to recruit and to retain civilian scientists and engineers to work at Department of Defense agencies and laboratories. During summer sessions, students will receive assignments as interns at DoD labs and agencies, or other assignments that will further their educational goals. After completion of their studies, SMART Scholars will be employed in assignments aligned with their areas of interest and needs of the DoD.

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Scholarship and Fellowship Program
Fellowship and education program intended for students interested in pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission. Fellowship renewable for up to three years. A 10-week, continuous, off-campus research internship at DHS or a DHS-affiliated facility will be required during the summer between your first and second year appointments.

Institute of Physics (IOP) Undergraduate Bursary Scheme
IPO provides around 300 bursaries to students who intend to study physics at university, with the objective of increasing participation in physics. The bursaries are worth £3000 over the duration of a bachelor's degree and £4000 over the duration of a master's degree. Contact your physics department to apply.

(Michael) Kidger Memorial Scholarship in Optical Design
Established to honour Michael John Kidger, a well-respected educator, design software developer and member of the optical science and engineering community. The award is anticipated to consist of a study grant of $5,000.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program
Each award covers a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees, and books for the graduate degree chosen. The amount and duration of awards vary by student based on the cost of attendance and the length of the graduate program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum available per student per year of study is $50,000 and the maximum length is six years.

The Department of Energy's Office of Science and National Nuclear Security Administration provides support and guidance to some of the nation's best scientific graduate students, and these graduates now work in DOE laboratories, private industry and educational institutions.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship
The program seeks to identify individuals whose scientific and engineering credentials will support study culminating in doctoral degrees. The purpose is to ensure continued training of a highly qualified workforce in disciplines needed to achieve NASA's scientific goals.

NASA Harriett G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program (JPFP)
Provides full-time underrepresented graduate students in science, technology and education with financial support for their education in NASA-related disciplines.
Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen, a member of an underrepresented group in STEM, which includes women, ethnic minorities and persons with disabilities, and be within the first 3 years of a graduate program at an accredited, U.S. university or be in the process of applying to an accredited STEM graduate program.

National Physical Science Consortium (NPSC) Graduate Fellowships
Provides a generous annual stipend, tuition and fees, and paid summer employment and technical experience for at least two years from leading national employers in the U.S.
Eligibility: U.S. citizens who has the ability to pursue graduate work at an NPSC member institution. Persons who already possess a doctoral degree in any field are ineligible. Students typically apply while seniors in college.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)
Fellowships for graduate study leading to research-based master's or doctoral degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.

Southern Regional Education Board Doctoral Scholars Program
Offers two awards to minority students in their early graduate studies pursuing a Ph.D. and one award to a minority student in his/her late stages of graduate studies pursuing a Ph.D. with plans to become faculty members in a postsecondary institution.
Eligibility: Full-time graduate students who are U.S. citizens and Native Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Asian-Americans or African-Americans who plan to become a full-time faculty member in a postsecondary institution upon completion of the doctorate.

American Astronomical Society (AAS) International Travel Grant
The AAS administers a National Science Foundation grant, which provides funding for airline travel to international science meetings.
Eligibility: You must hold a doctorate in astronomy or closely related science and work at a U.S. institution. Some possibility for funding graduate student travel does exist.

Rickover Fellowship Program in Nuclear Engineering
The Office of Naval Reactors of the U.S. Department of Energy supports nuclear-related graduate programs to assist students in becoming prepared to accept careers in the research efforts related to nuclear propulsion by providing financial support to the students and in establishing a program of participation at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory or the Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory. Technical areas include reactor physics, nuclear materials science and engineering, shielding technology, and two-phase flow.
Eligibility: Students with undergraduate degrees in the physical sciences or engineering who will be entering graduate students or who are currently enrolled in a qualified course of study but have not yet selected a thesis topic. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and may not be dual citizens.

Semiconductor Research Corporation Graduate Fellowship Program (GFP)
The objectives of the program are to encourage academically gifted students to pursue doctoral degrees in research areas consistent with SRC Global Research Consortium goals, and to develop a cadre of the highest quality doctoral graduates for GRC member companies and U.S. universities.
Eligibility: Graduate students pursuing or planning to pursue a Ph.D. degree with at least two years to completion of the doctoral degree. Must be U.S. citizens or have permanent resident, refugee, or political asylum status in the U.S.
Deadline: February 2010

Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Program
The fellowship of $10,000 for women pursuing a Ph.D./doctoral degree who demonstrate a superior academic record in the field of aerospace-related sciences and aerospace-related engineering.
Eligibility: Women of any nationality who are full-time PhD/doctoral students at any accredited university or college with evidence of a well-defined research program in aerospace-related science or aerospace-related engineering.
Deadline: November 2009


Graduate Students & Post-Docs

American Association of University Women American Fellowships
Support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited institutions.
Eligibility: Must be a female U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is in the late stages of her graduate education or involved in post-doctoral research.
Deadline: November 2009

American Australian Association Australia to USA Fellowships
In order to promote educational exchange between the United States and Australia, and strengthen science, technology and business relationships, the American Australian Association awards fellowships to Australians for advanced research and study in the United States.
Eligibility: Must be an Australian citizen doing research or studying business, science, technology, medicine or engineering at the graduate level: master's, Ph.D. or post-doctoral. Applicants may already be in the U.S. at the time of application.
Deadline: April 2010

Earthwatch Institute Research Proposal Grants
The international non-profit organization supports scholarly field research worldwide in the biological, physical, social, and cultural sciences and provides scientists with the funding and labor they need in the form of motivated, dedicated, paying volunteers.
Eligibility: Doctoral and post-doctoral researchers of any nationality.
Deadline: At least 18 months in advance of the anticipated fieldwork.

Lewis and Clark Fund for Exploration and Field Research in Astrobiology
The American Philosophical Society and the NASA Astrobiology Institute partnered to promote the continued exploration of the world around us through a program of research grants in support of astrobiological field studies.
Eligibility: Graduate students and post-doctoral and junior scientists at a U.S.-based institution who wish to participate in field studies, which encompasses, among others, astronomy, chemistry, evolutionary biology, field and population biology, geology, microbiology, molecular biology, oceanography, paleontology, and planetary science.
Deadline: February 2010

Sigma Delta Epsilon Graduate Women in Science Fellowships
It was the intention of the founders of Sigma Delta Epsilon that the objective of helping women in science include, when possible, financial assistance. The major component of the research can be either applied or basic. Exact fellowships amounts will range from $1000 to $4,000.
Eligibility: Be enrolled as a graduate student, or engaged in post-doctoral or early-stage junior faculty academic research, demonstrate financial need for continuation or completion of their research, and be a member of SDE/GWIS.
Deadline: January 2010
